Forgotten Realms: Birthright
Gold dwarves, also known as hill dwarves, are the subrace of dwarves that predominantly hail from the Great Rift.
They are stout, tough individuals like their dwarven brethren, but are often less agile than other dwarves. The average gold dwarf is about four feet tall and as heavy as a full-grown human, making them somewhat squatter than shield dwarves. Gold dwarves are also distinguishable by their light brown or tanned skin and their brown or hazel eyes. They have black, gray, or brown hair, which fades to light gray over time. Gold dwarf males and some females can grow facial hair, which is carefully groomed. Males often grow beards of great length.
They can be aloof, confident and sometimes proud, but overall, they value friendship and family. They tend to be more congenial and open to others than their kin.
They are known to be particularly stalwart warriors, great craftsman, and shrewd traders. They are often trained specifically to battle the horrendous aberrations that come from the Underdark.
Outsiders who wander into their strongholds may be surprised to find a people far more confident and secure in their future than others. Whereas shield dwarves suffered serious setbacks during their history, gold dwarves have stood firm against the challenges thrown against them and so have few doubts about their place in the world.
Gold dwarves speak a distinctive and archaic dialect of Dwarven known as Riftspeak. However, gold dwarves often take the time to learn the languages of their neighbours, such as Shaaran, Durpari, or Dambrathan.
